Thumbs UP for Pelorus Trust
December 2009
Thumbs UP is a day service for young adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities and is a service of Wellington After-Care Association, an association which has been providing services for people with an intellectual disability in the Wellington region for over 80 years.
Thumbs UP is based in Petone and provides adults who require high and very high levels of support opportunities to become active participants in their local community. Taking part in community activities such as attending Vincent's Art Workshops in Wellington , completing the Young New Zealander’s Challenge, swimming, kayaking and snorkeling, going to the gym and delivering meals on wheels.
Thumbs UP recently purchased a new building, namely The Senior Citizen’s centre in Petone; central in its location it places us in the heart of the Petone community. The plans for our new building include new toilets, art and music rooms, along with a multi-sensory room and one day a sensory garden.
The largest of our projects is the refurbishment and design of the bathrooms and the Pelorus Trust have funded its completion totaling $40,000. This donation has ensured that we will be moving into our new building early this year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Team at Pelorus Trust for their time, energy and above all their interest in Thumbs UP and the people who we support.
We look forward to working with Pelorus Trust in the future to expand our connection with the Greater Wellington Community.
The Trustees receive many letters from grateful recipients – here are some snippets from just a few:

Pelorus Trust not accepting applications for Racing Stake Money
Racing Clubs have been among the many organisations and community groups that Pelorus has supported over the years.
The Gambling Act explicitly allows for the payment of Race Stakes within the definition of Authorised Purposes. However, a recent judgement in the High Court states that the provision of horse racing stake money is not charitable.
As a charitable trust we must fund within this more narrow definition as well as the Gambling Act. In the vast majority of cases the two definitions overlap. Unfortunately some racing purposes, including stakes, now fall in the gap between a charitable and an authorised purpose.
While the Trust (and the charitable gaming industry in general) is seeking further legal advice and guidance from the Charities Commission on this issue, the Board will not be accepting any applications from Racing Clubs for stake money.
This will affect a very small number of applicants. Racing clubs may apply for other purposes if they can demonstrate a charitable benefit.
We will continue to post updates on this website as they come to hand.
Pelorus Trust funds Mission for Youth Alternative
Education Programme
June 2009
The trust recently granted the Wellington City Mission $75,000 towards the cost of their Mission for Youth Alternative Education Programme. Every day the Mission works with young people that have lost their way and feel let down by society and life in general. The Mission tries to restore some of their faith, rebuild that missing trust, and help them set boundaries and goals for themselves. Just one smile is usually a sure sign they have succeeded and that they are back on track towards a positive future.
“The Wellington City Mission acknowledges the loyalty and generous financial assistance that Pelorus Trust has gifted towards this programme over the past five years. It is a relationship that we respect and value enormously”. Leanne Thompson – Marketing Manager
